Elizabeth Perowsky Volunteer Workshop 2010
Library volunteers became ambassadors to the Iowa Department for the Blind during its annual Elizabeth Perowsky Volunteer Workshop April 16. Library staff designated the volunteers as their best ambassadors to help spread the word about not just the great service offered through the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, but throughout the entire Department for the Blind.
Volunteers were given guided tours of the Department building, during which Orientation Center students and staff members highlighted Department programs, such as the center, vocational rehabilitation and independent living. The volunteers were educated in the philosophy of the Department: that it's OK to be blind, and that with training and confidence, a blind person can achieve any goal he or she wishes to set.
Annual awards were also distributed during the day's luncheon. Volunteer narrator Sue Ketelsen received the 2010 Perowsky Award for her service to the Library. Other award recipients were:
