PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in the spirit of national solidarity and commitment to the protection of all human rights, the City of Sioux City is firmly committed to the rights of all its citizens to equality, opportunity, independence, and full participation in the affairs of our city, state and nation; and
WHEREAS, on April 21, 2010 the Iowa Department for the Blind, the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the South Dakota Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired have organized an open house in Sioux City for the express purpose of demonstrating to the community at large that people who are blind or visually impaired are fully capable citizens--able to live, work, and actively participate in their communities on a basis of equality; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Sioux City recognize and actively support the rights of persons who are blind or visually impaired to full equality, opportunity, and dignity while they are at work, at home, and in the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael M. Hobart, Mayor of the City of Sioux City, Iowa, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim April 21, 2010 as "Blindness Works Day" in Sioux City, Iowa and urge all citizens to reflect upon the untapped and unrecognized abilities of people who are blind or visually impaired.
